Click here for my Google Maps Suggestion on riding between Antigonish and Halifax. The section between Halifax and New Glasgow is in great shape. It is really pretty and rural. The road along the ocean to Route 7 has some rough parts... it is nice in parts too... You would take the 7 back up before getting to 16. I'm not saying to avoid this run, but if time is an issue, I like my route here. The part that goes around the Cape is Nova Scotia's best kept secret. They call it the Mini-Trail and is a good warm up for the real deal. You can see Cape Breton across the water, and is a cool sight to get you pumped up for gorgeous Cape Breton in the days ahead. This route is 4 hours. Highway is 2hrs from Antigonish to Halifax.

What a great site, this is the best site I have seen for bikers planning a trip! 4 of us are going to ride from Michingan to Nova Scotia in early June 2012. We will use your web site to plan our route around the Cabot Trail.

Can you tell us about the route to Halifax from Antigonish ? We want to take the route along the coast, is that Route 7 or Route 16? How long will it take us to get to halifax ?

Thanks again

Hi Brenda,
The great thing about planning 2 days is that if one day is nasty, just pick the better one! I hope your trip and the weather is good. Check with the site just before leaving as I am adding a live road construction link soon. I'll send you and email when it is up and running. Don't forget to send a pic of you and your group!

Lots of awesome information. Thank you! I plan to be part of a group from New Brunswick riding the trail in July this year (9th or so onward). We'll definitely be looking for t-shirts, and will consider either doing counterclockwise or two trips around to see it all. I grew up in Cape Breton (Port Hawkesbury) and don't get back very often. Again, thanks for all the biker friendly info. :)

Thanks so much Bob! That sounds like an awesome tour that you do, please comment with contact info if you invite is open to the public. I never thought of the pull off's on the right going ccw before - good point. Since you're a seasoned Trail Blazer, I would appreciate any other insights I have missed throughout the site... anything to help a fellow rider get all the info they need for a great trip. I wish you and all your guests safe travels in 2012!

Nice write up on the Cabot Trail. My wife and I lead a five day group ride every Sept during the week following Labour day. This will be our fifth year. Leaving Larry's River, Guysborough County (two night base camp) we then camp in Louisbourg, KOA in N Sydney and then Meat Cove for our Edge of the Earth Gathering. Riders (less than 20), have come from as far away as Texas for the ride. We agree with your trail preferences but would l add, regarding the clockwise/counterclockwise debate, that another reason that we prefer the counterclockwise is because the majority of the pull-offs are on our side so taking a group across traffic is minimal. Didn't know that about stopping in the park. Will review that one and be sure that we don't have 'an issue' with it. Again, nice write-up and we will certainly add your link onto our marketing activities. - Bob

In 2010 a lovely young singer/songwriter from Ontario was attacked by a coyote and later died from her injuries. It was on a popular hiking trail. Later that summer, a tenter was awaken by a bite to the head... can you imagine? They tracked and killed the coyote responsible. In a very controversial move, the NS government now has a bounty on coyotes. American animal rights groups promised it would hurt tourism from the States. There hasn't been any reported incidents since. Bears are not an issue here. We have black bears but no need for concern like other places. I like your husband already :). Unfortunately, I don't think there is a brewery/micro brewery in Cape Breton. You can both enjoy North America's 1st Single Malt Whisky at Glenora If you are a beer fan, when you get to Coastal Waters Restaurant in Ingonish, you absolutely have to have a pint of Alexander Keith's Red which is on tap. It remains the best pint of beer I've ever had, by far.
